the weight

Yesterday, women (and men that love them) around the world marched in solidarity with each other. It was truly an amazing thing to watch as pictures and videos of hundreds of thousands of people across every continent rallying together sprung up all over the internet. It was such an exciting day.

The day before - the dreaded day - I was feeling so torn about going to the march in my city. I sat in front of my computer, avoiding listening to or watching what was taking place in Washington. It felt so gross. So wrong. How did we get here? Is this real? Is 1984 finally a reality? Is this the apocalypse? Why even try anymore? What's the point? What's it all for? Why keep going? My couch is cozy so why ever get up? **drama**

Okay, maybe it wasn't that extreme. I try to stop myself from fully going down that mental path. But, let's be real, it wouldn't be take that much to get me there.

I wanted to march. I really did. It felt important. It felt right.

But, also, I was scared. Really scared. What if some crazy pyscho tries to hurt us? What if this peaceful protest turns into something dangerous? **actual thoughts**

Also, I'm 33 weeks pregnant. 33. weeks. pregnant. I'm a month & a half away from giving birth. I get winded walking through the grocery store for crying out loud. My relatively small body has done an amazing job at growing this baby so far but it's also been telling me lately, "Hey, you gotta lay low. We are on the home stretch here. Chill. We gotta cook this baby a few more weeks."

I was really really torn.
I decided to march.
Then I decided not to march.
I wanted to march for myself and for my girl.
But, what if something happened?
I wanted to not march for myself and for my girl.
I decided not to march.
Then, I didn't know.

Call it my first "lesson" in parenthood. Deciding which sacrifice for my little girl was more important.

This is undoubtedly a moment in history that will be remembered for a generations and I want to be able to say that I was an active participant in it. I want my daughter to know that her mama stood up for her when she couldn't yet stand up for herself. Also, I need to take care of her safety. This little Beeb is not even out in the world yet and she's already having me make tough decisions! What is this?! (how am I allowed to be a parent)

So, I sat in inner conflict, as the inauguration inevitably took place, wondering what was the right thing to do. Instead of deciding to march or not to march, I made a donation in my girl's name to the Obama Foundation. That felt good. That felt right.

Ultimately, at the urging of my dear friend Megan, after hearing my concerns, I decided to go to the rally at the end of the march instead of actually marching. It seemed like a happy medium. So, my feminist husband (geez I like him) and I drove downtown, walked ten blocks (which was nearly my limit) to the Capitol Building and joined the tens of thousands of women & men that love them in rallying together. There were pink pussy cat hats & little kids & old kids and assurances everywhere that the future is still bright. That future generations are not doomed to administrations that disrespect women & minorities and that call outright lies "alternative facts." Yesterday helped me believe that the pendulum actually does swing towards justice. It helped remind me that I am bringing my little girl into a world where people will still speak up for her. Simply showing up at the end of the Women's March in Sacramento yesterday was enough to put some light back into my perspective. And for that, I am glad I made the decision I did.

This is a really scary time. It's a scary time for me, it's a scary time for my country. But, all is not lost. And as the Sacramento mayor told us all yesterday, "Peaceful does not mean complacent."

The little girl inside me that nudges & rolls & pushes into my ribs every single day reminds me she is already strong. But, she is yet voiceless, as so many others are. She needs me. The voiceless need me and need us.

Sometimes I feel voiceless.
Sometimes, the literal weight of life inside me prevents me from marching.
That's why I need you. That's why we need each other.

northern california has my heart

A couple weekends ago, Ryan & I went on a little getaway to Sonoma county. We got an Air Bnb, went wine tasting & ate delicious Italian food, hiked to the beach & ate fresh bread & cheese & fruit for lunch, sitting on the ground by the ocean like hobbits. It was a perfect couple of days.

around here

The last few weeks have been happily busy. Lots of color and life. I thought I would share some highlights.

I love living in the farm-to-fork capital. It means delicious farmers market goodies all year long.

For Valentine's Day, Ryan & I went to our favorite favorite favorite ever ramen restaurant, the Ramen Shop in Oakland. The best cocktails & appetizers & ramen I've ever tasted. Every plate & drink are so thoughtfully made. We could eat here every week, seriously. But, then we couldn't pay rent. So. You win some you lose some.

I love my Auntie B. At least once a month, she will suggest a dinner idea or a trip to the flower mart. Driving to San Francisco with her, chatting about everything under the sun, buying flowers, and eating brunch is definitely up there in the "This is What Life is About" category.

I mean, COME ON. Look at these beauties. I swear, buckets of flowers really do it for me. At some point in my life, I really want to get paid to arrange flowers. Hold me to that please, interwebs.

*heart eyes heart eyes heart eyes*

I've also been busy working at B Street, a theatre company here in town that I have a lot of affection for, doing lots of things here & there. I accepted a gig doing another school tour with them and I am so looking forward to hitting the stage again before summer.

My dear dear friend, Jordan, recently opened an Etsy shop (jamstickershop!) where she sells her hand designed stickers. They are designed for a very expensive planner that I do not own, BUT I couldn't help but buy some for my moleskine planner. They're just the cutest and so well made and really could be used for planning or stationery or anything you want cute stickers for! I'm totally hooked. Go check out her shop!

I am also completely hooked on this Skin Polish by Lady Made Stuff. She makes all her products thoughtfully with essential oils. This scrub makes me feel so happy about life. I discovered her on instagram a while back and can safely say I am sold sold sold.

Also, I just love supporting the business ventures of strong women that are committed to creating quality products.

Lastly, a few nights ago, Ryan & I went to see MuteMath, a band I've been a fan of for nearly ten years. I've seen them play live two other times before, but Ryan hadn't ever. It was his birthday but he went happily to see "my" band play. We had such a good time. I love that no matter if Ryan is not familiar with a band (or a play or a movie or any other given performing art medium), or a little familiar with them, or a lot familiar with them, he is just appreciative of good art. He's appreciative of stage presence & great technique & he always notices the little things. I love going to shows with him and just living life with him.

He's the best.

So, that's it for me, as of now! I hope that wherever you find yourself in what can be a very dreary time of year, that you can recognize the color & life & light & goodness around you and be glad you're there to experience it.

a new chapter & grapes of wrath

hello internets!

here's a bit of what i've been up to lately if you're so inclined.

the last three weeks, i've been making my home in this lovely place. earlier this summer, i was cast in "Grapes of Wrath" at Sacramento Theatre Company, and it's been a whirlwind being a part of putting together such an epic show in less than a month.

but, we did it, and we did it together. which is a testimony to the story of Grapes of Wrath, itself. (read the book if you haven't & you will understand. or come see the show! :))

if i've said it once, i've said it a thousand times - i love this city. i am so happy to be in Sacramento doing what i love the most. to say i feel at home in every sense of the word would be an understatement, but it's the best way i know how to express how i feel about life right now. this place is home, what i'm doing is home, and i could not feel more lucky, more grateful, more honored, to be here, now. i am a part of something big & important & isn't that what good theatre (good art, really) is all about?

Grapes of Wrath is a story of survival, of hope in the darkest of times, of human kindness when there seems to be nothing left. and this group of people i have the privilege of working with is an example of those very things. i am so so very lucky.

i could write so much about what i've experienced & continue to experience through this production, but Jim Casy says it so much better than I ever could.

"but, when they're all workin' together - kind of harnessed to the whole shebang - that's right, that's holy."
